Position Statement
Schools should be teaching all relevant information with regards to the origin of life.
| Evolution Strengths | Evolution Weaknesses | ID Strengths | ID Weaknesses |
| Fossil evidence | Carbon dating | Irreducible complexity | Not against Creationists |
| Species level evolution | Above species level evolution | Scientists admit appearance of design | Many scientists will not admit actual design |
| Textbooks | Portions Against 2nd Law of Thermodynamics | Big Bang Theory | Lack of funding |
| Religious supporters | Evidence doesn't support findings | Theory outdates evolution | Public thinks it is a new idea |
| Big money | Lack of consistency | 60% of US population for it | Big money against it |
| Big organizations | Limits students | Enhances learning potential | Lack of understanding with public |
Most students never get to hear about the controversies surrounding evolution within the scientific community. Click this link to read more... http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/98810_idrebut06.shtml

Hi Cindy. The first (and second) source you posted is the discovery institute. They are the primary advocates of I.D. Not exactly an unbiased source. The author of your first article says that I.D. is not necessarily religious. So who is the designer? How can it be anything but religious?

Nice power point. Very impressive.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the comments. ID is not religious in the fact that it doesn't prescribe the "who". ID just says that there was a designer. It doesn't ascribe to the 6 day creation that some Creationists hold to, it just says at some point in time, someone or something designed this world and everything in it. Whether it was God, Gods, ET, or something else...we don't know. But scientifically, we can see that the complexities here on earth and in the universe are too great to have come about naturally. There are many different definitions of religion and I'm sure that EVERY BELIEF could fall into the broader definitions. For example, one definition says: A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion. <http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/religion>
This definition could be applied to anything that one believes passionately. So, evolution, ID, creationism, and even panspermia (the belief that life arrived on this planet via extraterrestrial intelligence and another aspect of ID) or neovitalism (the belief that life is too complex for us as humans to ever know how it came to be) all could fall under religion. But, all of these are theories that one group or another holds true. The real question here is, what is the evidence. (continued)

I think that science should be looking towards that, rather than questioning whether it is based on religion or not. What happens if someday the "who" is scientifically discovered? I'm not saying that it definitely will be, but what if it was? Would we have to hide the facts so as to not sound religious even if it's the truth? Well, we have facts now. We can prove that the Darwinian model isn't true and that a lot of the ground that science stands on is based on "what ifs". ID advocates are challenging those "what its" and proving that they don't stand up scientifically. They have answers that could expand science, not limit it. Right now, biology is grasping for something to hold on to with regards to that Darwinian model of evolution and it's just not holding up. Science should go where the facts lead them, not where their "religious" beliefs lean them. Thanks for the kudos on the PP presentation. If you have more questions or comments, feel free. Cindy

Very good. My favorite part was the comic. I think people really like comics lol. I also like the table, visuals are much easier to look at and are very informative. Great job. I think you bring up a lot of good points about something that many people just assume is true because a teacher told them. Way to step out of the box.
