Baseball Under the Influence

Jeffrey Quihuis-Bell

English 102

Should Major League Baseball have a stricter testing policy regarding illegal use of Anabolic Steroids?

Position Statement

Baseball players should be tested regularly with intense repercussions to ensure fairness and safety of baseball.

The Testing Policy

1. Players are subject to random drug tests at anytime.

2. They can be given these tests in the off-season regardless of there native country.

3. Every player will receive at least one test at some point, and are subject to more tests at anytime.

The Punishment Policy

1. The first offense is a 10-day suspension.

2. Second offense, 30 days.

3. Third offense, 60 days.

4. Fourth offense, 1 year.

Steroids are ruining Major League baseball. Players are injecting themselves and obtaining unatural body statures and obtaining unhuman feats. Records are being shattered and players are harming themselves for the future. Policies need to be changed and players need to be controlled in order to bring fairness and morality back to baseball.

The ones who are really in danger are the youth of the nation. They see these baseball stars/role models and are seeing what they are doing to get there. They too are using anabolic steroids in order to try and attain a perfect body in order to make it to the big leagues.

Opposing Arguments

Baseball Players right to privacy is being revoked and the Game is more exciting now than ever. Baseball players shouldn't be held accountable for their influence on children.

Hello, well i looked over your presentation page, well i think you have a great topic idea, but got confused with your topic question. However, the idea of the baseball influences is great, you have not that much useful link but like the sources...

Hi Jeffrey,
I thought your page was well laid out. I thought it could use a little more information, but I'm not sure if you are done or not. I think that you are correct in saying baseball needs tougher guidelines for drug usage. One question though...In the punishment section, you said that the punishments would continue to increase with each offense. Would you also want to make sure that they had mandatory testing when they returned and then every so often on a random basis? Or just randomly after they return? Good job with the pictures!

Baseball and professional sports are being ruined by performance enhancing substances. The average person knows about steroids, but most don't know about the parents giving their kids hgh. Human growth hormone is the new standard in performance enhancers that don't actually work against the body, but instead promote more growth than the child would have naturally achieved. My kids have seen this kind of thing in US swimming, and the whold thing is disgusting. Problem is science is providing ways for those who have no sense of fairplay to get " the edge" through substances that will actually help their performance.
Bravo for making a stand against those who look for unfair advantages!
